MidJourney: The Easiest Set Up Guide for Beginners

So, You've had your eye on MidJourney for a while now, and you're ready to make the leap into creating amazing AI images for yourself. Congratulations! If you found me through my newsletter, FB group, or Pinterest, you know that I'm an absolute MidJourney fiend. I've been fascinated with the capabilities of this AI image generator for a long time now, and I believe it to stand head and shoulders above the others. MJ is THE industry standard, and while there is a little bit of a learning curve, MidJourney can become second nature to even the newest of beginners. I will help guide you along the way. Together, We've got this!

Here is a step-by-step guide to accessing MidJourney and Discord, thorough, but precise. Let's get started!

How much will it cost?

You will need Discord and Midjourney to begin. Discord is free and Midjourney is as low as $8 per month if paid yearly and $10 month to month.

First, we need to install Discord.

Ready to Sign up for Discord and Log in to learn to how to use it and MidJourney? This is for you if you have never used either app before. Go to www.discord.com . At the very top, click "Create Account".

Click "continue. You may have to do a verification screen that you're human. The next step is to Create your first Discord server.

Click on "Create My Own". At the top of the screen, click to verify your email. Check your email and verify it. Click "Continue to Discord" in your email. Next, Click Explore Discoverable Servers.

Now, let's add Midjourney

Click On Midjourney ( see below) if for some reason it does not show up, you can always do a search for it. It is one word. Midjourney.

Once you click on Midjourney, there will be a pop-up. Click on # Getting Started.

The top of the screen will say "Currently in Preview Mode. Join Midjourney." Click it.

There will be a pop up at the bottom that says "You're now a member of Midjourney." (see below)

On the left hand side, you will click on a Newcomer Room. It doesn't matter which one- It just needs to say newbies-(number). There will be a lot of activity in this room. Ignore it. You'll only be in here for a second. On the bottom of the screen there is a blank bar to type in. Probably has a flashing orange exclamation mark. Type in /imagine and then a word. Any word will do. You're just triggering the subscribe function. Hit ENTER.

Once you hit ENTER, a popup will say "SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED". Click Subscribe.

Click the "Manage Account Button.

You are now Leaving Discord. Check "Trust Midjourney and click on "Visit Site"

You are now at the Subscription page of Midjourney. It should look like this: The $8 month is if you pay yearly. Click Monthly Billing and it switches to $10 a month. Hunt down your credit card and get everything paid up.

Once you pay, it will send you back to Discord. On the left side of your screen there is a + sign with add a server. This is the best part! You're making your very own server that is peaceful and quiet and just for you. All that craziness where you are now will soon be a thing of the past.

Click "Create My Own" Click "For me and my friends" Name Your Server. Any name will do. This is just for you.

You now have your very own server! Congrats!

Click on the white sailboat icon on the left, directly below your server button.

Click on "Midjourney Bot". A window pops up ( see below ) and you will select your server in the drop down menu and then click continue.

Click Authorize.

Now you will click on your server button on the left side ( has your initials on it and is above the MidJourney sail boat button. You are now back in your own server room and ready to create your first image! Whew! We made it! CELEBRATE!!

Looking at the top right of your screen- you should see the Midjourney Bot under your name.

We are going to stay with the default settings for now. I will show you those later.

Our first Midjourney Image

LET'S MAKE SOME MAGIC! On the bottom of the screen in your command bar... type /imagine and then hit the space bar. A prompt window will show up in the bar.

Type whatever you want! Sasquatch in an outhouse smoking a cigarette and scrolling on his cellphone" whatever you want! Here, watch...

Well, Lookit THAT! I have four images to choose from.

The images are numbered left to right, top to bottom. 1, 2, 3, 4. So, U1 would be to upsize the first top left image, U2 the second top image, etc. Let me show you. I like the second image. 2. I click on U2 to upscale it and it shows up below.

But we aren't done yet.

I need to click on the image directly to get the option to open in browser.

Once I do that, I can right click and save as. :) The image is NOT ready to print yet. You will need an upscaler for that and we can talk about that later. For now.... you are the proud owner of a Sasquatch with bad habits. ( See the example below )

Let's say I kind of liked image number 3, but I'm not sold on it completely. I'm going to click the V3 button. It then gives me 4 more variations of that image. I can do this multiple times until I get one that I like. I can click on the foursquare to get a better view, then click out of it and it goes back to the inline view. I can then choose my favorite and follow the steps above. Open in browser and then right click/save as.

And there you have it! Welcome to the rabbit hole! Let that imagination fly and come up with some amazing things! Try adding in more detail. Midjourney is unlike the other generators in that it doesn't like a whole lot of words. You have limited words per prompt before MJ stops listening, so use them wisely.

You also have limited time with the $10.00 plan. You can go into your settings and change it from fast mode to slow mode and save your hours, or burn through them all first and be stuck on relaxed mode for the remainder of the billing cycle. You can ALWAYS make images... even after your hours run out. You just have to do it on slow mode.

Try typing /settings and hit enter. You can see there where you can change it from fast to relaxed. ( see below )

If you're brave enough.. start pushing buttons! Try out the different stylize buttons and see what it gets ya! There are a ton of youtube videos to help you through.

Still struggling with the install of Discord and Midjourney? Here is the video that helped me get started. Sadie walks you through from beginning to end. A few things have changed since she filmed this but it should help!

I can't wait to see what you make!! Please show me, either in the group or by emailing me. I'm so excited!!
